Garrett Aviation has completed its first installation of Honeywell’s integrated display system–known as the Primus Epic control display system/retrofit (CDS/R)–in a Gulfstream III for an undisclosed owner. FAA supplemental type certification is expected by early November, pending Honeywell’s achieving TSO approval, expected later this month.

The installation, performed at Garrett’s Springfield, Ill. facility, replaced the GIII’s existing standard analog instruments. The installation featured:

• three 8- by-10 in. full-color flat-panel displays,

• ability to interface with Honeywell equipment upgrades (i.e., TCAS II, FMS, Primus II radios, EGPWS and existing autopilot and flight director systems),

• growth capability for future regulatory and air traffic management requirements (i.e., CNS/ATM, Free Flight),

• fewer line replaceable units (LRUs) and electromechanical indicators in the aircraft.

Other Honeywell systems in the installation include Primus II radios, NZ-2000 FMS, digital air-data computers, EGPWS, Laseref inertial reference system, TCAS, weather radar and lightning strike system.

Prospects for further such installations are promising, said Mike Anderson, director of avionics for Garrett. “The benefits are tremendous. Anyone wanting to take advantage of the proven reliability of flat panels or to be prepared for the emerging CNS/ATM environment is a candidate.” Base price for the retrofit, including equipment, installation and certification, is less than $600,000.
