The Burbank-Glendale-Pasadena (Calif.) airport authority met on March 17 to deliver a presentation on its application for a mandatory nighttime curfew at Bob Hope Airport, which would extend from 10 p.m. to 6:59 a.m., according to NBAA. After the presentation, an airport authority subcommittee will likely recommend that the airport commissioners adopt the curfew, said the association.

The curfew move comes after the airport completed an FAA Part 161 study; the rules specify that the FAA must approve any curfew. The study examined three curfew options, including the mandatory nighttime ban, a departure curfew and a noise-based curfew. Bob Hope Airport already has a voluntary curfew covering the same hours as the proposed mandatory curfew. According to the Part 161 study, cargo carriers and general aviation operators would feel the impact of the curfew most; there would be little impact on airlines that use the airport. Fines for violating a new nighttime curfew would range from $3,671 for the first violation to $14,684 for the fourth violation in a 12-month period. In earlier comments about curfew discussions, the FAA said that the voluntary nighttime curfew already has a 97-percent compliance rate and that the proposed new curfew would unjustly discriminate against modern quiet airplanes.
