Pratt & Whitney Canada (PWC) has admitted to the beginning of studies intended to result in a new family of light turbine engines derived from the basic PW200 core and intended to power an as-yet unannounced family of new light helos. The so-called PW205 would be in the 600-shp output range and was initially intended for the once-pondered Bell JRX program, a lighter, entry-level rotorcraft Bell has officially abandoned (see page 74.) P&WC claims it intends to press forward with the engine regardless. Another proposed powerplant, the 890-shp PW209, is poised for launch pending a committed airframe go-ahead from a rotorcraft maker. Candidates under discussion include the long-studied Sikorsky S-76D and as an alternative powerplant for Eurocopter’s EC 145.
