Honeywell last month announced it has joined two European technology research programs, one intended to improve air traffic flow management across the continent and the other aimed at developing low-cost flight controls for light airplanes. The company said it is close to completing the initial phase of a research project that aims to develop “innovative ways to improve the European air traffic management system.” The results will be applied in the Single European Sky ATM Research (Sesar) program. Honeywell’s input has focused on improving air-to-ground cooperation, reducing operational uncertainty by increasing data accuracy and improving coordination between controllers and pilots. For the second project Honeywell is working with Rheinmetall Defence Electronics on the Small Aircraft Future Avionics Architecture program to study and demonstrate flight control system technology for general aviation aircraft.
