As part of its strategy to increase its FBO holdings, fractional-share operator Avantair has set its sights on buying or building a second FBO, this one at Essex County Airport in Caldwell, N.J. Avantair opened a new FBO at Camarillo Airport in southern California in August and provides FBO services at its company headquarters at St. Petersburg-Clearwater Airport in Florida. The strategy behind Avantair’s move into the FBO business is to try to help the fractional share operation save money on fuel and other services to reduce repositioning costs as its fleet flies around the U.S., according to a company filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission. “Avantair believes that maintaining fixed-base operations will allow it to capitalize on both internal and industry growth since Avantair will provide these services not only to aircraft in the Avantair fleet, but also to other operators, particularly those flying aircraft in the very light jet category.”
