Instrument manufacturer Aerosonic of Clearwater, Fla., announced yesterday that it bought Op Technologies, a Beaverton, Ore. manufacturer of glass cockpit avionics suites primarily for the light sport and experimental aircraft market. “It fits perfectly,” said Aerosonic executive vice president Mark Perkins, “because we were headed down the path of developing our own glass display products. This allowed us to take several years off the development cycle. It fills a hole in our product line.” Aerosonic also gains, he added, engineering and manufacturing experts from Op Technologies, including president Dexter Turner. Aerosonic plans to continue Op’s FAA certification program, and the approval could occur in about six months. The first likely retrofit will be for Cirrus singles, but Aerosonic is also talking to other aircraft OEMs. “We have been encouraged by many of them to move into this product line type,” Perkins said. “Competition’s good for everyone. I think that the more options [OEMs] have, the better it is for them.”
