As plans move ahead for certification of the Eclipse 500 in early 2006, Eclipse Aviation unveiled details of its six-phase pilot training program. The Eclipse Jet Basics Self-Paced Study Course is a five-part series of CD-based modules that provide an overview of jet aircraft and the operating environment to assist pilots in the transition from propeller-driven airplanes to jets. The coursework would serve as review material for experienced jet pilots. The first module is “Introduction to Jet Engines,” to be followed over the next nine months by modules focused on high-altitude physiology, high-altitude and high-airspeed aerodynamics, high-altitude flight planning, and high-altitude weather and weather radar. The company has also acquired an L-39 jet trainer for use in upset recovery training. “Eclipse 500 training will use a perfect mix of computer-based training and hands-on experience,” said Don Taylor, v-p of safety and training.
