The FAA last month released Airworthiness Directive 2007-10-15, which requires that operators of all 765 U.S.-registered Cessna Caravans install low-airspeed awareness systems at a cost of about $8,200 per airplane. The AD also requires that Cessna-issued AFM Supplement S1–which addresses operations in icing conditions–be incorporated into the Caravan AFM. The low-airspeed warning system is necessary, the FAA stated, because Caravan pilots “have not been diligent in the management of the aircraft when operating in icing conditions.” According to the agency, the system provides “an alert with sufficient time to allow pilots to take the proper corrective action.” While the new AD supersedes AD 2006-06-06, the requirements of AD 2006-06-06 must still be met until the operator complies with AD 2007-10-15. The AD is effective June 21. Compliance is required by September 21.
