Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport (PHX) completed the first segment of a three-phase runway maintenance and improvement project last month. Phase Two, which began last month, involves temporarily displacing the threshold of 11,500-foot Runway 8/26, allowing 6,000 feet of usable runway and a 1,000-foot overrun. At press time, the runway was scheduled to be closed completely from February 28 until March 1. Arrivals were expected to be reduced to 28 per hour if visual approaches could not be conducted, depending on wind. The airport’s two south parallel runways have full ILS approaches for Runways 7R and 7L, but back-course-only approaches to Runways 29L and 29R. The northernmost Runway 8/26 has ILS on both ends.
