The FCC has approved AirCell’s air-to-ground frequency license, clearing the way for the Louisville, Colo. company to begin rolling out the ground infrastructure to support its new broadband communications service. “In just over a year, the flying public will have the ability to use their own Wi-Fi-enabled laptops and PDAs to communicate just like they do on the ground,” said AirCell CEO Jack Blumenstein, noting that the company’s flying “wireless hotspot” concept is scheduled to go live early in 2008. The service is designed to provide access to e-mail and the Internet after takeoff at connection speeds at or near those of home cable modems and at prices similar to what hotels charge.
