Barnstable Municipal Airport in Hyannis, Mass., is the facility of choice for business aviation on Cape Cod, but operators have not been blessed with the most luxurious of terminal options.

Beginning last month, Rectrix Aerodrome Center has changed that, providing an alternative to legacy FBO Griffin Aviation. Founded in 2000 as a Part 135 air charter operator, Rectrix is opening the first of what it expects to be half a dozen aerodrome centers. The second has broken ground at Bradenton International Airport, Sarasota, Fla. The Hyannis facility involved a capital investment of $6.5 million by Rectrix.

Company COO Bill Weibrecht was most recently airport manager at nearby Martha’s Vineyard Airport, just a 10-minute crow hop off the coast of Hyannis. He told AIN the Cape Cod facility is “unlike anything else you’ll find not only on Cape Cod, but all over the Northeast.” He said the expansion of the aerodrome concept will come partially through acquisitions of existing facilities (to be renovated), and partially through new-build projects on what he described as “underserved” airports.

Weibrecht said the FBO hangar space at the Sarasota facility is complemented by an array of adjacent “hangarminiums” to be leased to primarily Part 91 aircraft operators. “They can make use of the aerodrome facilities–fueling, terminal and passenger lounge–while having a measure of privacy and autonomy with their own dedicated facility.”

Rectrix Aerodrome Center at Hyannis currently has 15,000 sq ft of build-to-suit office space available and a 22,500-sq-ft heated hangar. Company president Rich Cawley, who has homes in both Sarasota and Cape Cod, celebrated its opening with a gala on September 1, saying, “We are committed to introducing a new standard of service for private jet owners, their pilots and passengers [at] Barnstable Municipal Airport.”
