Korea Chooses S-92 for President

The Republic of Korea agreed to buy three S-92s to fulfill its presidential mission. Sikorsky will deliver them in a VIP configuration beginning in 2007. The Korean Ministry of National Defense selected the helicopter over the AgustaWestland EH-101, which will carry the U.S. President.

Korea hesitated to complete the deal after the US101 won the U.S. presidential competition, but concerted lobbying by Sikorsky representatives convinced the government to proceed, rather than let bids expire early last month.

Three other countries have ordered the S-92 for similar roles within the past year: Turkey and Turkmenistan have three on order to carry their heads of state and Gulf Helicopters of Qatar has ordered one for VIP missions.
