Stage 2 jets are under attack again at Van Nuys Airport (VNY) in Southern California. The Los Angeles Board of Airport Commissioners directed Los Angeles World Airports (LAWA), which operates VNY, to consider an alternative to spur elimination of Stage 2 jet operations. A Part 161 study under way at VNY could eventually result in the elimination of Stage 2 jets, but the board also wants LAWA to pursue a program under a grandfather clause in which Stage 2 operations would be phased out during a seven-year period.
