Airbus’s A320neo program got a major boost in a Boeing stronghold Friday, as Japan’s Peach Aviation signed a firm order for 10 of the re-engined narrowbodies along with another three of the A320 line’s current baseline model. Announced at a signing ceremony in Tokyo attended by Peach Aviation managing director and CEO Shinichi Inoue and Airbus president and CEO Fabrice Bregier, the order supplements Peach Aviation’s fleet of 18 A320s out of an earlier order for 20. With the addition of its first A320neo, Peach will become the first low-fare carrier in Japan to operate the new narrowbody.
Peach expects the first current-generation A320 to arrive during its 2018 fiscal year, which ends in March 2019, followed by the first A320neo in the summer of 2019.
The airline said it would use the neos to both “update” existing aircraft and facilitate its business expansion. The contract calls for the A320neos to carry 188 seats and the A320s to hold 180. Peach has not yet decided on a powerplant for the neos, which come either with Pratt & Whitney PW1100Gs or CFM Leap-1As.
