Long-time Boeing sales executive Ihssane Mounir will replace John Wojick as vice president of sales and marketing for Boeing Commercial Airplanes, the company announced Friday. Wojick has decided to retire after 36 years of company service, effective early 2017, said Boeing.

The move comes as a critical period for Boeing, whose widebody sales in particular slumped this year until a pair of orders over the past two weeks from Qatar Airways and China Southern Airlines boosted Dreamliner backlogs along with prospects that the airframer could avoid cutting production of the 777 again. Before the recent sales, Boeing CEO Dennis Muilenburg conceded that "pressure" on the 777 could result in a production rate of less than seven per month if more than one campaign did not swing Boeing's way.

In his new role, Mounir takes responsibility for the sales and marketing of all commercial airplanes and related services to airlines and leasing customers in all markets worldwide. His team's duties include sales strategy, operations and customer relationships.

“Ihssane is a seasoned sales leader with in-depth knowledge of Boeing customers worldwide,” said Boeing Commercial Airplanes president and CEO Ray Conner. “His extensive knowledge of our products and services puts him in the best position to help our customers address their fleet and operational needs and be successful in today’s competitive environment.”

Mounir has held several leadership positions within Boeing’s sales organization, most recently as vice president of sales for Northeast Asia.

He previously served as vice president of marketing, sales strategy and operations, a post in which he developed and implemented “cross-regional strategies” for Boeing Commercial Airplanes.

Before that assignment, Mounir led the division’s sales efforts in several regions around the world, including as vice president of sales for Latin America, Africa and the Caribbean. He also led sales efforts in Europe, Russia and central Asia.

Mounir joined Boeing as a senior aerodynamics engineer in 1997. Boeing said it would name a new regional leader for Northeast Asia sales at a later time.
