Gregory Polek has spent his entire career in aviation journalism with AIN, starting as a proofreader and assistant to then-managing editor Mary Mahoney in 1995 after serving an internship with&nbsp;New Jersey Monthly&nbsp;magazine and completing his B.A. degree in English/Writing at New Jersey’s William Paterson College. By 1997 Polek accepted a position as an associate editor, covering the regional airline beat for&nbsp;Aviation International News&nbsp;in place of retiring industry veteran Don Anderson. The assignment took Polek across North America and Europe to profile regional airlines varying in size and mission from the likes of floatplane operators Kenmore Air and Chalk’s Ocean Airways to regional jet operators such as SkyWest and American Eagle. Today, in his dual role as Air Transport Editor and International Airshow Editor, Polek writes, edits, and manages AIN’s commercial aviation content while overseeing each of the company’s daily international air show publications in Paris, Farnborough, Singapore, and Dubai. Most recently Polek has assumed oversight of daily coverage of the Helicopter Association International’s annual Heli-Expo convention.

An $8 billion order commitment signed by China Aviation Supplies Holding Company (CAS) on Thursday marked a thawing of China’s freeze on a purchase of Airbus widebodies imposed in protest of the European Union’s emissions trading scheme (ETS). The deal, signed at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing by CAS president and CEO Li Hai and Airbus chief executive Fabrice Brégier in the presence of&nbsp; visiting French President François Hollande and Chinese President Xi Jinping, involves 42 A320-family narrowbodies and 18 A330s.


Last year China “held in abeyance” orders for as many as 35 A330s and 10 A380s in protest over the ETS, prompting <a href="http://ainonline.com/aviation-news/2012-07-02/eus-emissions-trading-scheme-could-cancel-a330-production-hike">Airbus to postpone plans to raise A330 production</a> from 10 to 11 per month. Since then the EU has <a href="http://www.ainonline.com/aviation-news/ain-air-transport-perspective/2012-11-12/europe-halts-international-ets-implementation">postponed imposing carbon fees on non-EU airlines</a>, while European airlines, still subject to the ETS, complain that the taxes they must pay place them at a competitive disadvantage. The status of the remaining 27 widebodies on order with Chinese companies remains uncertain.
