Gregory Polek has spent his entire career in aviation journalism with AIN, starting as a proofreader and assistant to then-managing editor Mary Mahoney in 1995 after serving an internship with&nbsp;New Jersey Monthly&nbsp;magazine and completing his B.A. degree in English/Writing at New Jersey’s William Paterson College. By 1997 Polek accepted a position as an associate editor, covering the regional airline beat for&nbsp;Aviation International News&nbsp;in place of retiring industry veteran Don Anderson. The assignment took Polek across North America and Europe to profile regional airlines varying in size and mission from the likes of floatplane operators Kenmore Air and Chalk’s Ocean Airways to regional jet operators such as SkyWest and American Eagle. Today, in his dual role as Air Transport Editor and International Airshow Editor, Polek writes, edits, and manages AIN’s commercial aviation content while overseeing each of the company’s daily international air show publications in Paris, Farnborough, Singapore, and Dubai. Most recently Polek has assumed oversight of daily coverage of the Helicopter Association International’s annual Heli-Expo convention.

The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration is evaluating a request from Boeing to fly a 787 to test potential fixes to allow the airplane to re-enter service, the agency confirmed on Tuesday. The FAA gave no word on when it might respond to Boeing, however, nor would it confirm reports that the airplane could fly as early as this week.


Although Boeing also confirmed that it submitted an application, it too would not comment on details. <a href="http://www.ainonline.com/aviation-news/2013-01-17/all-787s-now-grounded-await-inspection-protocol">All 50 Boeing 787s remain grounded</a> as aviation authorities from the U.S. and Japan continue their investigations into two cases of “thermal runaway” in lithium ion batteries in 787s.


Boeing’s request comes as investigators from the U.S. National Transportation Safety Board this week start a non-invasive “short cell” test of all the cells within in exemplar battery in an effort to detect any short circuits. The NTSB also sent an investigator to France with the airplane’s battery contactor, which connects a wiring bundle to the battery, for examination at its manufacturer, Thales.
