Gregory Polek has spent his entire career in aviation journalism with AIN, starting as a proofreader and assistant to then-managing editor Mary Mahoney in 1995 after serving an internship with&nbsp;New Jersey Monthly&nbsp;magazine and completing his B.A. degree in English/Writing at New Jersey’s William Paterson College. By 1997 Polek accepted a position as an associate editor, covering the regional airline beat for&nbsp;Aviation International News&nbsp;in place of retiring industry veteran Don Anderson. The assignment took Polek across North America and Europe to profile regional airlines varying in size and mission from the likes of floatplane operators Kenmore Air and Chalk’s Ocean Airways to regional jet operators such as SkyWest and American Eagle. Today, in his dual role as Air Transport Editor and International Airshow Editor, Polek writes, edits, and manages AIN’s commercial aviation content while overseeing each of the company’s daily international air show publications in Paris, Farnborough, Singapore, and Dubai. Most recently Polek has assumed oversight of daily coverage of the Helicopter Association International’s annual Heli-Expo convention.

The pilots of Republic Airways voted to accept the International Brotherhood of Teamsters as their collective bargaining representative by a 68-percent margin, according to a tally taken in late June. After certification by the National Mediation Board (NMB), the Teamsters officially becomes the representative of the pilots of Republic Airways regional subsidiaries Chautauqua, Republic Airlines and Shuttle America, as well as low-fare unit Frontier.
In June Republic announced a plan to divest its majority stake in Frontier by the end of 2014 and give its pilots an equity stake in the company in return for pay and benefits concessions. However, the vote for the Teamsters consolidates all Republic Airways pilots into a single bargaining group. The pilots of Chautauqua, Republic Airlines and Shuttle America continue to work under a contract signed in 2003.
Negotiations for renewal of that contract, which became amendable in 2007, have entered federal mediation. The Teamsters win means all of Republic’s pilot groups must now negotiate the terms of their amalgamation “at the appropriate time,” according to the union. Nevertheless, Republic insists the union vote will not affect its restructuring efforts.&nbsp;
