Gregory Polek has spent his entire career in aviation journalism with AIN, starting as a proofreader and assistant to then-managing editor Mary Mahoney in 1995 after serving an internship with&nbsp;New Jersey Monthly&nbsp;magazine and completing his B.A. degree in English/Writing at New Jersey’s William Paterson College. By 1997 Polek accepted a position as an associate editor, covering the regional airline beat for&nbsp;Aviation International News&nbsp;in place of retiring industry veteran Don Anderson. The assignment took Polek across North America and Europe to profile regional airlines varying in size and mission from the likes of floatplane operators Kenmore Air and Chalk’s Ocean Airways to regional jet operators such as SkyWest and American Eagle. Today, in his dual role as Air Transport Editor and International Airshow Editor, Polek writes, edits, and manages AIN’s commercial aviation content while overseeing each of the company’s daily international air show publications in Paris, Farnborough, Singapore, and Dubai. Most recently Polek has assumed oversight of daily coverage of the Helicopter Association International’s annual Heli-Expo convention.

Air Canada launched the first direct competition against Bombardier Q400 operator Porter Airlines out of Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport on May 1, when the flag carrier’s new regional subsidiary, <a href="?q=node/29106">Sky Regional Airlines</a>, began service between the downtown Toronto airfield and Montreal. Flying under the new Air Canada Express brand, Sky Regional operates hourly Q400 service up to 15 times daily, between 7:30 a.m. and 9:30 p.m. from Toronto and between 6:45 a.m. and 8:45 p.m. from Montreal. Sky Regional’s fleet consists of five Q400s leased from Air Canada subsidiary Jazz Air. Emulating Porter’s service, Air Canada offers free lounge access with Wi-Fi and refreshments, as well as regular shuttle service from a nearby hotel.
The first Air Canada Express flight marks the start of brand transition for all of Air Canada’s regional affiliates. Air Canada Jazz, for one, plans to adopt the same Air Canada Express livery over a five-year period, starting with the introduction of its own new fleet of Q400s on June 1. Other regional carriers, including Central Mountain Air, Air Georgian and EVAS, plan to adopt the new livery over their regular aircraft paint schedule.
