For the upcoming thunderstorm season, the FAA is changing the severe weather avoidance plan (Swap) to cut down on gate holds and takeoff delays associated with route closures. During future Swap events, New York Tracon will staff a phone position to handle alternate routing requests from flight-planning service providers. According to Ralph Tamburro, New York Tracon’s system operations manager, the inherent flexibility of general aviation allows for use of underused routings that while longer in mileage will get aircraft off the ground more quickly. The new position will be aimed at helping GA pilots determine these routes and get swift clearance for them.
