MyGoFlight and the IMC Club have jointly launched the EFB Challenge, a knowledge contest intended to study and advance the use of low-cost tablets, such as the iPad, as electronic flight bags (EFB). Interested pilot contestants can enter local contests and winners will advance to regional events. Regional finalists will compete nationally during EAA AirVenture 2015 in Oshkosh, Wisc., in late July.

Pilots will be measured on their use of the tablet as an EFB in terms of efficiency, proficiency and accuracy in aeronautical decision-making during flight planning, pre-flight and in-flight real world situations. The goals are to understand how pilots use their EFBs and identify proficiency parameters; identify where improvements to tools or instruction are needed; get more pilots to see and understand the benefits of flying with an EFB; and find the best EFB users.

The first four contests are taking place during the Sun ’n’ Fun Fly-In this week in Lakeland, Fla., during MyGoFlight’s “iPad Takes Flight! – EFB Challenge” forum sessions. All forums during the show are taking place in the Central Florida Aerospace Academy, across from the Florida Air Museum, in Room One. The two remaining sessions at Sun ’n’ Fun will be held at noon on April 4 and 5. A set of questions will be asked to test the use of the iPad in planning, pre-flight and in-flight scenarios.

Pilots can apply online to be selected as one of four contestants to compete in each session or they can follow along and answer the questions while in the audience. Selected contestants will be notified in advance. Pilots should bring their iPad fully charged with flight apps up to date and data downloaded for the continental U.S. Prizes will be awarded provided by MyGoFlight and Marv Golden Pilot Supplies.

IMC Chapters will also host local and regional contests. Flight schools, military and commercial operators are also welcome to create contests that can then compete on a regional level along with IMC Clubs, the EFB Challenge sponsors said.
