Simulated own-ship position is among the new features on the flight-planning and moving-map app.
Version 2.0 of the iFlightPlanner iPad app adds many new functions, including a flight recorder and virtual GPS own-ship display on FSX and X-Plane flight simulators.

A major release of iFlightPlanner’s iPad app—Version 2.0—adds many new features to the flight planning and moving-map app, including virtual GPS capability to display simulated own-ship position on FSX and X-Plane flight simulators and an integrated flight recorder. The iFlightPlanner app synchronizes with the company’s flight-planning website, including the mobile version, so flight plans created on the website can be synchronized easily with the user’s iPad. Version 2.0 was released on the Apple App Store today and Sun ’n Fun attendees can demo the new app at Sennheiser’s booth (No. B-084 and B-085), which is the presenting sponsor for iFlightPlanner.

A key design feature of iFlightPlanner 2.0 is compliance with Apple’s iOS 7 Human Interface Guidelines. One example of how this works in the app is the sharing of core information between features so users don’t have to re-enter the same data multiple times. According to iFlightPlanner co-founder and director of technology John Burnside, “The restructured ‘Flights’ tab within the app is the result of that vision and has created the perfect foundation to introduce new features without overwhelming pilots.”

Some of the other new features in iFlightPlanner 2.0 include: FAA auto-routing and Sids and Stars; FAA-approved weather briefing via CSC DUATS; electronic flight plan filing and closing, including ICAO flight plans; Velocity Weather by Baron Services; an expanded digital instrument panel with approach timer; split-screen view with an enhanced approach plate viewer; cockpit voice recorder with auto-pause; and pilot log that includes IMC Club proficiency tracker.

The iFlightPlanner system is available for business aircraft and fleet operators, in the Premium Business edition, which allows sharing of flight and aircraft information among pilots, dispatchers and other designated parties.

The basic iFlightPlanner service is free. Premium memberships start at $9.95 per month and add iFlightPlanner’s graphical weight-and-balance calculator, maintenance log, exporting of flight plans to .gpx and .gpl formats, a soon-to-be released pilot currency report, unlimited stored profiles and more. A 30-day free trial of the premium membership is available.
