The FAA issued an airworthiness directive–2013-18-09–on September 18 affecting some Honeywell ASCa emergency locator transmitters (ELTs) installed on transport-category aircraft. The AD, which takes effect on October 3, requires one-time visual inspections of the ELT transmitter units for possible wiring installation faults that could lead to a fire similar to the one that began aboard an unoccupied Ethiopian Boeing 787 at London Heathrow Airport in August. Operators of affected aircraft have 120 days to comply with the AD.
