The NTSB’s preliminary report on the June 6 crash of a Bell 206L-1 into an elementary school parking lot as it approached for landing near Manchester, Ky., said, “Several eyewitnesses reported clear weather and stated the helicopter was ‘spinning’ before impact.” The accident occurred at 2315 local time. Other witnesses contradicted earlier reports that mentioned dense fog in the area at the time and some saw the helicopter only just before impact. One witness reported seeing the Air-Evac EMS helicopter in an approximate 40-degree nose-up attitude, and hearing no engine sounds shortly after. Air-Evac’s GPS tracking system reported only that the helicopter approached the pad from the west, turned southeast, flew overhead the intended landing site and proceeded about one mile, turned north, then west, then back southeast before the end of the recorded data. The helicopter struck the ground 750 feet short of the landing pad and was destroyed in the crash, killing the pilot and two medical personnel aboard.
