The command pilot of an IrAero AN-24 was sentenced to essentially 18 months of house arrest by a Russian court for what it found was bad judgment that led to the crash of his aircraft Aug. 8, 2011, according to a story in the Moscow Times. The aircraft ran off the runway, injuring 12 people and substantially damaging the aircraft, during an approach in poor weather to the Blagoveshchensk Airport (UHBB) in the Amur region of Russia. It is unclear why the pilot ignored alerts from the aircraft’s ground proximity warning system before the accident. The court barred the pilot from leaving the town of Ulan-Ude for the entire length of his 18-month term. He is also not allowed to leave his apartment between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m. daily.
