A discussion at the NBAA's International Operators Conference last week raised the issue of the 2006 midair collision between a Boeing 737 and an Embraer Legacy over the Brazilian jungle.

While the two U.S. pilots complied with the lost-communications procedures common in the States, the ICAO rules for flying in Brazil are slightly different. The ICAO procedure calls for pilots to turn their transponder to code "7600" within seven minutes after the loss of ATC communications. The Legacy crew had been out of communication for more than 40 minutes at the time of the collision.
