SATA Air Acores, the carrier that provides interisland transport in the Azores, has leased a third ATP twin-turboprop from BAE Systems Regional Aircraft to boost its fleet to five. Also, on June 15 the airline celebrated its 60th anniversary of scheduled operations. For 17 of those years it has flown ATPs on interisland services on short-sector, high-intensity operations that result in typical annual utilization rates of 1,500 hours per year on 2,500 sectors. The fifth ATP allows SATA to establish a new route between Funchal (Madeira) and the island of Porto Santo. The airline is developing operations in Madeira so that twin-center holidays can be marketed. The interisland network links 10 destinations serving all nine islands.
