Using its new design for a lightweight turbofan engine, Brazil's Tupan Aircraft is bringing a trio of hybrid-electric cargo drones to market. The vehicles will be able to carry loads of up to 600 kilograms on flights of up to 1,200 kilometers. The company eventually aims to develop a passenger-carrying aircraft.

Eve Air Mobility, an eVTOL aircraft maker backed by major Brazilian aerospace manufacturer Embraer, announced that it has signed a letter of intent with advanced air mobility start-up FlyBIS to develop eVTOL operations in South America. As part of the deal, FlyBIS has provisionally agreed to purchase up to 40 of Eve’s eVTOL aircraft.

Los Angeles'S Advanced Air Mobility Pioneers Share Their Inside Track on Transforming Public Transportation

Urban Movement Labs (UML) has published a guide for communities looking to include eVTOL aircraft in their mix of public transportation options. The public-private not-for-profit alliance, which is working with the city of Los Angeles, says that its publication Integrating Advanced Air Mobility: a Primer for Cities gives municipal and other government stakeholders an overview of the emerging advanced air mobility (AAM) technologies, as well as “steps to consider during exploratory and initial planning phases, and considerations for the near future.”

The 65-page guide is based largely on work already done to bring AAM to sprawling Los Angeles. This covers almost two years of planning and policy formulation since Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti set up what is now called the Advanced Air Mobility Partnership.

Among the companies backing the partnership are eVTOL aircraft developers Archer, Supernal, Volocopter, and Overair as well as ride-hailing platform Blade and helicopter operator Helinet, which has plans to branch out from its current helicopter services. Both the Los Angeles Department of Transportation and its City Planning division are involved in the project as well. Joby and its customer Delta Air Lines also have plans to start eVTOL air services in Los Angeles.

According to a new video posted by Volocopter, the German eVTOL aircraft developer seems to have quietly rebranded the largest of the three vehicles it has in development. The four-passenger VoloConnect appears under the new name VoloRegion, promising a range of 100 kilometers (63 miles) and a cruise speed of 180 km/h (110 mph). The video shows the aircraft's distinctive architecture, based on a twin-boom wing and a V-shaped tail section with a pair of ducted fans for horizontal flight and six electric motor/rotor units for vertical lift. No explanation for the name change is offered, with the company confirming that VoloRegion is part of a trio of products that also includes the two-seat VoloCity air taxi and uncrewed VoloDrone light freighter.

Daniela Schaff
 

In December 2022, eVTOL aircraft developer Wisk Aero announced the appointment of Daniela Schaff to the new position of head of sustainability. She has been with the company for just over three years, having previously served as senior staff supply manager and sustainability group lead. Prior to joining Wisk, Schaff worked as a supply chain manager with the start-up's parent company, Kitty Hawk. Earlier in her career, Schaff spent more than 10 years with the Lufthansa Technik, mainly in customer service roles for the aircraft maintenance, repair, overhaul, and refurbishment specialist. She earned a bachelor's degree in foreign trade from the Außenhandelsakademie der Handelskammer in Hamburg, Germany, and later a bachelor's degree in operations management from Southern New Hampshire University.

The events will feature guest speakers, panel sessions, and discussions by leaders in the autonomous aircraft and eVTOL industries, as well as representatives from government agencies and academic researchers. The technical meeting will focus on vehicle design, regulatory solutions, automation, and artificial intelligence, while the symposium will cover all the latest advancements and biggest challenges facing the eVTOL industry.
