UK Study Charts How eVTOL and eSTOL Aircraft Could Transform Public Transportation

Electric aircraft could enable new public transportation services connecting British cities and regions more efficiently, according to research commissioned by UK Research and Innovation’s Future Flight Challenge. The UK Advanced Air Mobility Market Assessment prepared by Swanson Aviation Consultancy’s EAMaven team focuses on 20 prospective routes, including 14 that would use eSTOL aircraft and six for which eVTOL vehicles would be deployed.

The study determined that the services would employ 224 aircraft, of which 160 would be four-passenger eVTOL aircraft, with the remainder being 19-seat eSTOL models. The authors, Darrell Swanson and Jarek Zych, calculated that on average each aircraft would generate 1,854 revenue flight hours per year, with the eVTOL vehicles having somewhat higher utilization rates.

The report’s conclusions include projected annual revenues from the 20 routes of £704 million ($810 million), equating to £3.1 million per aircraft. Based on UK Department for Transport data, EAMaven anticipates that the new air services would result in time savings of 11 person-years each week, which it says would equate to weekly productivity savings of £2.6 million. Another notable projection in the report is that 9,000 tonnes of carbon emissions would be saved by reducing the number of car journeys in the locations assessed.

Autonomous eVTOL developer Wisk Aero recently publicly revealed its new sixth-generation aircraft. The company's unpiloted Generation 6 aircraft is designed to carry passengers up to 90 miles, flying at a cruise speed of 120 knots and an altitude between 2,500 and 4,000 feet.

The air taxi features 12 propellers, six of which can tilt, which allows the aircraft to take off and land vertically. During cruise, the vehicle transitions to wingborne horizontal flight. Wisk says its batteries will take just 15 minutes to fully recharge.

Last month, Wisk and its primary investor Boeing jointly published a concept of operations. This document spells out a path to introducing uncrewed urban air mobility services in the context of the U.S. National Airspace System.

The California-based company has already flown more than 1,600 test flights with earlier technology demonstrators, mostly with its fifth-generation model called Cora, which Wisk will continue to fly for research and development purposes while working to certify the Gen 6 aircraft. It has not said when it intends to start flying the first examples of its planned production aircraft, and also has not announced a name for it.

Now that Lilium Jet has achieved its merger with special purpose acquisition company Qell and Nasdaq flotation in September 2021, attention will turn to the pace at which it can complete development and certification work for its seven-seat eVTOL aircraft. The company is working to adjust the configuration of its propulsion system, to reduce the number of ducted fans from 36 to 30, before it can start test flights with a pre-production prototype.

Dan Nale
 

Dan Nale is an aerospace executive who spent 35 years working with Gulfstream Aerospace Corporation before joining Eviation's technical steering committee in October 2022. His appointment to Eviation came about one month after the company flew the first test flight of its all-electric Alice commuter airplane.

At Gulfstream, Nale most recently served as senior vice president of programs, engineering and test, a role in which he was responsible for certification, research, and development. Before joining Gulfstream, he worked as an engineer on the space shuttle wing program for Grumman Aerospace Corporation.

Nale holds a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from the Citadel Military College in Charleston, South Carolina, as well as both a master’s degree and a PhD in civil engineering from the University of South Carolina. He also holds a Master of Business Administration degree from Mercer University in Macon, Georgia. He is a visiting professor of practice in the School of Civil and Environmental Engineering at The Citadel.
