Eve Urban Air Mobility says it is the first eVTOL aircraft developer to start work on an agnostic plan for an urban air mobility concept of operations in the Miami area. Along with partners L3 Harris, Skyports, and the Community Air Mobility Initiative, it is engaging with local stakeholders to develop a blueprint for air services that others can adapt for their own business models. Miami-based airline GlobalX said it could take up to 200 of Eve's eVTOL aircraft and deploy these on multiple routes.

In the next stage of a continuing development contract with the Afwerx Agility Prime program, U.S. Air Force pilots Hank Griffiths and Jonathan Appleby last week made what Beta Technologies said was the first crewed military flight in an eVTOL aircraft. They made the first in a series of test flights with the Alia 250 vehicle, which, along with several other eVTOL and eSTOL designs, is being evaluated by the Pentagon for possible military missions.

Universal Hydrogen says it will manufacture its hydrogen propulsion systems in a newfactory at Albuquerque, New Mexico’s main airport and will also use the site as a distribution hub for the capsules in which green hydrogen will be delivered to operators. Flight testing is due to be conducted at Moses Lake in Washington state, and the company also plans to establish an engineering center at Toulouse in France.

Industry Responds to FAA Draft Engineering Brief on Vertiport Design

Around 100 industry stakeholders gathered last week at Helicopter Association International’s Heli-Expo show in Dallas to review and comment on the FAA’s recently released draft engineering brief for a vertiport and vertistop design standard. The brief will eventually produce an FAA advisory circular for vertiports.

Rex Alexander, principal of the heliport/vertiport consultancy Five Alpha, told FutureFlight sister publication AIN following the gathering that he believes this AC will be published no earlier than 2024, “but it is anybody’s guess” as to the timing. With companies expecting to inaugurate eVTOL passenger service by 2025, “we are on a pretty tight timeline” to provide feedback and impact the FAA standard, he added. That standard is critical for harmonizing constituent parts, including national fire protection standards, local building codes, and insurance requirements.

Ukraine Helicopter

It is tempting to imagine the role that new eVTOL and eSTOL aircraft, and especially those with longer range and substantial cargo payloads, could be playing in supporting Ukrainians under attack from Russian forces. While that prospect may remain hypothetical for now, the rotorcraft community had Ukraine on its minds when it gathered in Dallas last week for the Helicopter Association International's annual Heli-Expo trade show. Ukraine Helicopters should have been among the exhibitors, but for all-too-obvious reasons could not make the trip across the Atlantic. Organizers made sure the company's stand was suitably adorned and left it open for industry colleagues to make their feelings known by leaving messages for those absent and in danger. The poignancy of the occasion was captured in this film produced by AIN Media Group’s director of video, Ian Whelan.

Hank Griffiths

Hank Griffiths is chief of engineering and airworthiness and test lead for the U.S. Air Force’s Afwerx team. In March 2022, he became the first U.S. military pilot to fly a crewed eVTOL aircraft when he took the controls of the Alia prototype being developed by Beta Technologies. Griffiths has had a 30-year career with the USAF, which he served in a variety of engineering and safety development roles. A former test pilot for the F-35 and F-16 combat aircraft, he graduated from the U.S. Air Force Academy in 1991.

UPCOMING EVENTS

March 28 - 31, 2022 / Long Beach, California

The Vertical Flight Society is staging its first H2-Aero Symposium & Workshop to address the potential for hydrogen propulsion to make aviation more environmentally sustainable. The event will include presentations from executives with companies developing hydrogen-powered aircraft and the fuel cell-based powertrains these will use. Representatives from NASA and the U.S. departments of energy and defense will take part in the event. Attendees will be able to tour the Shell heavy-duty hydrogen refueling station at the Port of Long Beach. U.S. government involvement in the event will include representatives from the U.S. departments of energy and defense, as well as NASA. From Europe, the DLR German Aerospace Center will participate, along with its partner H2Fly, which is working on a new hydrogen regional airliner. Other participants include the California Fuel Cell Partnership, the Massachusetts Hydrogen Coalition, the University of Maryland, and investment group Nexa Capital.
