While the capital raised from its merger with Broadstone Acquisition is almost 25 percent less than Vertical Aerospace expected, the start-up says the funds will cover the cost of bringing its four-passenger eVTOL aircraft to market by 2024. The prototype for the newly renamed VX4 fixed-wing model is expected to make a first flight in 2022 as the company works on EASA type certification.

The two-seat Maker technology demonstrator made its initial hover flight at Archer's test center in California on December 16, marking an important milestone en route to the goal of launching commercial services with a four-seat eVTOL model in late 2024. The company says it will roll out a "production-intent" version of the larger aircraft in 2022, as it steps up flight testing of the Maker to include the transition from vertical to horizontal cruise flight.

EASA Opens Consultation Over New Aircraft Airworthiness Requirements

EASA this week issued a notice of proposed amendment (NPA) intended to make it easier to certify, manufacture and operate new types of aircraft, including new eVTOL models, that are not fully taken into account by existing regulations. The NPA 2021-15 document published on December 21 proposes changes to continuing airworthiness rules that the European agency says will, “close the gaps that currently exist in Regulation (EU) No 1321/2014, which pose compliance difficulties in relation to the management of manned aircraft that are not conventional or have a powerplants other than a piston engine or a turbine.”

In particular, the amendments seek to alter requirements that EASA says are currently “unnecessarily explicit” in terms of how the characteristics of aircraft and their propulsion systems are defined and categorized. This would cover new types of powerplant, including electric and hybrid-electric. The rule changes are intended to maintain airworthiness standards while avoiding the need for EASA member states to use exemptions to approve non-conforming aircraft. They also cover factors such as training and maintenance.

Eve and Zanite Make the Case For Yet Another SPAC-backed eVTOL Landing on Wall Street

2021 has been a year in which four leading eVTOL aircraft pioneers, seeking to bring urban air mobility to Main Street, filed lucrative flight paths via share flotations on Wall Street. Following in the footsteps of Joby, Archer, Lilium, and Vertical Aerospace, Embraer subsidiary Eve on December 21 confirmed that it intends to merge with special purpose acquisition company (SPAC) Zanite and seek a New York Stock Exchange listing in the second quarter of 2022. In a presentation for prospective investors, the partners spelled out what they say will set Eve apart from rivals that, at face value, appear to be significantly further advanced in their plans to bring electric aircraft into commercial service.

The fact that Embraer intends to retain its position as majority shareholder, with an 82 percent stake in the merged company, is a big part of the equation. The Brazilian aerospace group intends to back the new Eve Holding entity with the full force of its engineering, certification, manufacturing, and product support infrastructure.BAE Systems looks set to be a key partner with Jerry DeMuro, former CEO of the UK-based defense group’s U.S. business, recruited to be Eve’s co-CEO, alongside Embraer’s Andre Stein. Eve has yet to give details about the propulsion system for its eVTOL, but the inclusion of aero engines maker Rolls-Royce could be a clue.

New aircraft developers including Overair, Jaunt Air Mobility, XTI, and Beta Technologies were at this year’s National Business Aviation Association show making the case for new applications including air taxi services and cargo deliveries. In this FutureFlight video, the start-up’s leaders argued that factors such as reduced carbon emissions and noise could widen public acceptance for new urban air mobility services, while also improving the business model for aircraft operators.

When it unveiled the two-seat Maker eVTOL back in June 2021, Archer Aviation founders Adam Goldstein and Brett Adcock said the technology demonstrator would make its first flight before year-end, and on December 16 they achieved that goal. The aircraft, which is being used to complete design work on the four-seat eVTOL the start-up plans to bring intocommercial services by the end of 2024, hovered at an altitude of 26 feet for just over 30 seconds. With the symbolic maiden lift-off achieved, the serious flight test task is now underway at Archer’s facility in California. In the new year, it will expand the hover flight envelope before attempting to transition to horizontal cruise. Meanwhile, the company aims to roll out its full-scale, four-passenger eVTOL by the end of 2022.
