Vertical Aerospace and Partners Demand Strong UK Government Action To Support Electric Aviation

As the UK prepares to host the COP26 UN Climate Change Conference in Glasgow, Scotland, Vertical Aerospace has joined forces with Virgin Atlantic Airways, leasing group Avolon, London Heathrow Airport, vertiport developer Skyports, and air traffic control service provider NATS in calling on the government to support the launch of electric-powered intercity flights by 2025. In a white paper entitled The Future of Advanced Aerial Mobility, the UK-based eVTOL aircraft developer spells out the economic and environmental benefits of electric-powered passenger flights, arguing that the new aircraft could open up routes that are not currently viable.

Vertical and its partners want the UK government to align itself with local authorities, city mayors, and aviation regulators in supporting the launch of commercial electric flights. Pointing out that major cities including Paris, Los Angeles, and Singapore City have already made similar commitments, the white paper effectively maintains that the UK will miss an opportunity to be a leader in the advanced air mobility sector if the government fails to act.

Japan’s Tetra Aviation recently posted a new video of its Mk-5 eVTOL prototype conducting flight tests in California. The aircraft shown is the unmanned SN2 version, which is being used to advance the development of the SN4 piloted aircraft, for which the company aims to start deliveries from the end of 2022. Initially, Tetra is aiming to get the kit-built single-seater approved under FAA’s experimental aircraft rules but eventually will seek full Part 23 type certification.

The design features 16 sets of electric motors installed in nacelles along with a pair of wings, with each nacelle having small vertical lift rotors. A pusher propeller at the rear is used during cruise flight and the Mk 5 is expected to have a range of up to around 100 miles.

A small, privately funded German start-up claims it has found a way to have the best of both worlds, by combining the range delivered by a fixed-wing aircraft with a new approach to eVTOL propulsion. It remains to be seen whether the technology risks associated with this approach can be overcome or at least mitigated.
