Volocopter says it will start commercial operations with the four-seat, all-electric VoloConnect aircraft in 2026. The new model will have sufficient range for intercity flights that cannot be served by the smaller VoloCity aircraft. The company says it will seek further investment to support work to bring the aircraft to market.

Aerospace and defense group Thales is concentrating its expertise on safely supporting operations by autonomous aircraft alongside piloted machines in non-segregated airspace. Much of the early groundwork for larger eVTOL aircraft operations anticipated for the advanced air mobility sector is being conducted with smaller unmanned air systems, with which the France-based group is already actively engaged.

EASA Surveys Europeans to Assess Public Acceptance of Urban Air Mobility

The European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) this week published the findings from a survey of public attitudes toward to urban air mobility (UAM). The study polled 4,000 citizens living in six European metropolitan areas via a quantitative survey, and also included 40 more in-depth interview qualitative interviews, as well as a simulation of aircraft noise.

The main topline finding was that 83 percent of respondents have “a positive initial attitude” towards UAM, with 71 percent saying they would be willing to “try out UAM services.” There was a more positive response when the use of the new aircraft for support in public emergencies and medical transportation was mentioned.

The cities used for the online survey were Barcelona, Spain; Budapest, Hungary; Hamburg, Germany; Milan, Italy; Paris; and Oresund, the region encompassing the Danish capital, Copenhagen, and Malmo in southern Sweden. A minimum of 600 people from each of these locations participated in the survey.

“As a result of this study, for the first time, EASA and the EU have insights into what the general public in Europe thinks about this entirely new development in the field of aviation,” commented EASA executive director Patrick Ky. “For EASA as a regulator this information is crucial. It will allow us to set up the rules and regulations for this area in a way that is aligned with the expectations and perceptions of citizens.”

This week Volocopter announced plans for a larger, longer-range eVTOL aircraft than the two-seat VoloCity model. The four-seat VoloConnect is intended to carry a pilot plus three passengers, or four passengers if the company achieves its intended goal of being approved for autonomous operations. It is expected to deliver a range of 60 miles when it enters service in 2026.

According to CEO Florian Reuter, the project has been in the works, under wraps, for the past two years. In this video, the German company shows low-level flight testing of a one-third scale prototype at its facility near Munich. The lift-and-push concept features a wing connected to a V-shaped tail by a pair of parallel beams supporting six sets of electric motors and rotors. To the rear of the fuselage, a pair of ducted fans support cruise flight.
