Revised Aerial Urban Mobility Rankings Will Spark More Debate

Some observers would liken the nascent advanced air mobility sector to a gold rush or even a horse race. There was a time before the Covid-19 pandemic threw a spanner into the global economy when it seemed more like a stampede.

Some, including FutureFlight, would argue that the field of contenders in the contest to bring new types of aircraft to market has never really been as large as has been suggested by the more hyperbolic assessments. In any case, it certainly appears to be thinning now, with the more credible new programs apparently pulling ahead of the pack as the finite pool of funding and the scale of the technical and regulatory obstacles become fully apparent.

The question of how to rank the unprecedentedly large array of new aircraft programs in terms of their likelihood of achieving success will always be open to debate and even contention. But that doesn’t mean the discussion isn’t a worthwhile, and even enjoyable, activity.

With Airbus having heavily pressed the case for hydrogen propulsion in 2020, it seems salient that one of the European aerospace group's last tweets of 2020 was to replay video of the past summer's first autonomous flight of its CityAirbus eVTOL technology demonstrator. Observers had wondered whether Airbus might quietly discontinue efforts to bring an all-electric vehicle to market, but the @AirbusHeli tweet insisted that CityAirbus "is one of the main elements of our technology roadmap towards zero-emission flight." The four-minute video gives a fascinating insight into the flight testing process for new aircraft, with the Airbus team just as focused as if this had involved a 400-seat airliner.

Alastair McIntosh
 

Lilium appointed Alastair McIntosh to the new position of chief technology officer and head of design organization in December 2020. He was previously managing director and head of engineering and technology with Rolls-Royce Germany, where he led a team of 1,500 engineers. He joined the aircraft engines group in 1987 as a design engineer and has previously held roles such as chief engineer for the Trent XWB engine that powers the Airbus A350 airliner and chief engineer for the BR725 engine for the Gulfstream G650 business jet. 

During his time with Rolls-Royce Germany he was an EASA Form 4 holder and accountable for providing engineering functional leadership, product safety, and continued airworthiness for a fleet of around 6,000 engines.

McIntosh has a degree in mechanical engineering from Heriot-Watt University in Scotland, is a chartered engineer with the Institution of Mechanical Engineers and a fellow of the Royal Aeronautical Society. He has been a board member of the BDLI German Aerospace Industries Association for the past five years.
