Austrian remote-sensing specialist Airborne Technologies has unveiled its latest product at the Singapore Airshow. Known as the S.C.A.R.(self-contained aerial reconnaissance)-Pod, the system requires no aircraft system modification, and only needs a standard hardpoint to be ready for immediate use.
Fifty years ago, on Sept. 14, 1963, a pair of test pilots for Mitsubishi Heavy Industries pushed the power levers forward and a uniquely designed twin-engine turboprop raced down the runway then lifted into the sky. Powered by two Turbomeca Astazou turboshafts, the XMU-2, as the prototype was named, spawned the production version Garrett 331-powered MU-2 family, of which about 290 are still successfully flying worldwide.
Gulfstream Aerospace appointed Brent Monroe vice president of North American sales for the western division. In his new role, he leads a sales team whose territory includes the Western U.S. states, as well as Alaska and Hawaii, and the Canadian provinces of Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba and Saskatchewan. Monroe, who is based in Dallas, has more than 20 years of experience in both military and business aviation, particularly in the Midwest region.
On its way to Shanghai, the Pilatus PC-12NG on static display this week at ABACE stopped in Shangri-La for a demonstration of the airplane’s high-altitude capabilities. When the turboprop single took off from Shangri-La Airport in Diqing (elevation 10,787 feet), it had a payload of 2,200 pounds. Included in this payload were six people, including two from the Chinese CAAC (aviation authority), a Chinese navigator and the pilot. The aircraft reportedly used only one third of the airport’s runway before lifting off.

An Airports Authority of India official, speaking on condition of anonymity, told AIN the schedule for that nation’s new GPS-augmented navigation system (Gagan) might be pushed back to the end of this year. The Gagan system is the only satellite-based augmentation system that has an enhanced algorithm specifically for the equatorial region.
AgustaWestland has suspended talks with China Chongqing Helicopter to assemble an unspecified AW model in Chongqing. The Chinese enterprise had sought to assemble the AW helicopter for both domestic sales and export, as well as those from other OEMs, at the site. AW already assembles AW109s in China under a separate arrangement with Avicopter.

Recent upgrades to India’s Defense Procurement Policy (DPP) 2011 that are to be incorporated in DPP 2012 could soon allow foreign vendors to buy from Indian companies assemblies that contain foreign content while getting credit for the entire assembly, as long as the content is paid for in rupees.
The civil aviation authorities for mainland China, Macau, Canada and the Cayman Islands have accepted Hongkong Jet as an approved aircraft maintenance organization. They follow recognition by the Hong Kong Civil Aviation Department. “With the strong growth in business aviation in mainland China and customers’ increasing level of sophistication, more customers on the mainland are requesting maintenance services to international standards as they travel to Hong Kong and beyond,” said Chris Buchholz, CEO of Hongkong Jet.
