Garmin unveiled its aera 795 and 796 portable aviation navigation devices yesterday. Both units incorporate features of the company’s GPSMap 696 and add capabilities such as a touchscreen user interface, pilot-selectable screen orientation, 3-D Vision and electronic en route and approach charts.
Online flight planning service Fltplan.com now offers interactive IFR en route and sectional charts. Users can print the charts and overlay various layers onto charts, such as weather radar, airspace and TFRs, state outlines, grid fixes, airports and victor and jet airways. The airways view also displays SID and Star symbols on the charts, but only those associated with the planned flight.
The FAA’s Airport/Facility Directory now includes a new section that contains taxi diagram charts for selected FAR Part 139 airports. The new section was added in support of the agency’s program to reduce runway incursions. The diagrams are the same full-page charts that are published in IFR terminal procedures publications and are in addition to the VFR sketches already added to the directory.
