Jeppesen has begun development of FliteDeck Pro (for commercial operators) for Microsoft’s Windows 8/Surface tablet. Delta Air Lines is the launch customer and plans to equip its 11,000 pilots with Microsoft Surface 2 tablet computers as electronic flight bags, with Boeing 757 and 767 pilots scheduled to receive their units later this year and the rest next year. The Surface 2 tablets will run Jeppesen’s FliteDeck Pro and will be used for document viewing and checklists, replacing 38 pounds of paper per airplane and saving Delta $13 million a year in fuel and associated costs.
Bombardier’s annual Safety Standdown here in São Paulo on Monday and Tuesday drew a record number of participants, confirming the event’s status as a key part of the build up to the LABACE show. According to the event’s manager, Janet Schiebelhut, the fourth Safety Standdown Latin America drew 325 registered attendees, with 285 present on the first day for six workshops.
Jeppesen signed an agreement with Rockwell Collins to automatically and securely transfer electronic charts via Wi-Fi and cellular networks using Rockwell Collins’s Ascend Aircraft Information Manager (AIM). Operators will be able to use AIM in Pro Line Fusion and Pro Line 21-equipped aircraft to streamline access to Jeppesen flight data, provided through an “enhanced direct connection to the flight deck of the aircraft.” This data includes Jeppesen e-charts, flight management system navigation, performance and V-speed databases and checklist files.
Jeppesen’s newest iPad app, Mobile FliteDeck VFR, is now available for U.S. pilots flying in the continental U.S. The VFR version of Mobile FliteDeck is designed both for flight planning and in-flight navigation, with data-driven navigation information and access to Notams and text and graphical weather data.
TAG Aviation (UK) has become the first UK operator to receive CAA authorization to use Apple iPads as Class 1 electronic flight bags. TAG pilots are replacing paper documents and charts with iPad apps such as Vistair DocuNet (a document management and distribution program) and Jeppesen Mobile FliteDeck (terminal charts and other aeronautical documents). TAG Aviation is planning to seek regulatory approval for paperless cockpits in other countries where it holds air operator certificates, including Switzerland, Spain, UAE (Bahrain) and China (Hong Kong).
Jeppesen is advising customers that its JeppView products are currently presenting the wrong image for the ILS or LOC Runway 21L approach chart for Atlanta DeKalb-Peachtree Airport. The obsolete version of the chart has a revision date of March 1, 2013, effective March 7. The current chart, to be included in the next JeppView release, is dated May 24, 2013, effective May 30.
Jeppesen introduced the aviation industry’s first integrated navigation data service (INDS) iPad solution, which allows for a direct connection–via Wi-Fi–between the Apple tablet and an aircraft’s avionics system. First available for the Pilatus PC-12 NG, the iPad app will manage cloud-based, wireless data updates for installed Honeywell Primus Apex avionics that are paired with the Aspen Avionics CG-100 Connected Panel. The new INDS iPad app is expected to be available this summer.
Jeppesen (Booth 1351) has teamed up with Honeywell to develop what it claims is the first integrated navigation data service (INDS) data manager application for the iPad. It will be available later in the summer, initially for operators of the Pilatus PC-12 NG with the Honeywell Primus Apex integrated flight deck and Aspen Avionics CG100P connected panel. The INDS solution greatly simplifies the update process by wirelessly uploading or downloading critical Jeppesen and Honeywell flight data to the onboard avionics.
From May 2, the FAA will start publishing new instrument approach plates that include an enlarged segment of airspace to protect aircraft during circling approaches. The new airspace also offers pilots additional obstacle clearance while considering their MSL altitude above the MDA, which affects true airspeed.
The boundaries of protected airspace for circling approaches are defined by arcs drawn from the threshold of each runway at an airport. The larger the aircraft, the larger the arc.
Jeppesen has teamed with kit aircraft manufacturer Lancair to include charts and NavData service with the purchase of Lancair Evolution turboprop singles. The charts and data service are part of a PilotPak data bundle that also includes supplemental databases, such as obstacle, terrain, SafeTaxi and airport diagrams. In addition, as part of the data bundle service, access to Jeppesen Mobile FliteDeck on the iPad is included at no additional charge.
