Britain’s Marshall Aerospace group (Hall 4 Stand A12) and U.S. manufacturer Lockheed Martin is celebrating a 40-year relationship that looks set to continue for about another 25 years. The two companies have worked together since the mid-1960s to support British operations of C-130 Hercules military transport aircraft and will be in a new contract expected to run until about 2030.

The Ministry of Defence (MoD) has encouraged innovative contracts that change a traditional industry stand-off role as, for example, a supplier of spares, into that of a partner committed to various packages of enhanced service. Now comes the next step–fully fledged availability contracting.

Israel’s Plasan Sasa, a supplier of ballistic armor products, has been awarded a contract as a subcontractor for Permali Gloucester, the Royal Air Force’s sole source supplier for armor projects. This contract, valued at several million dollars, is a follow-on to a previous award made in 2003.

Vector Flying Training Services, a joint company founded by Bombardier, KBR and URS to compete for a UK military training contract, has named Sir Malcolm Pledger as its new chairman. Pledger has nearly 40 years experience with the Royal Air Force, starting as a university cadet and ascending to commander in chief of the RAF Logistics Command.

Making its debut this week at the Farnborough International show, Raytheon’s Airborne Stand-off Radar (ASTOR) system will be delivered to the Royal Air Force (RAF) in stages over the next year. Comprising five modified Bombardier Global Express business jets and eight ground stations, ASTOR is a major new ground surveillance capability for the UK. Raytheon is now looking for additional customers.

BAE Systems hopes that up to three important UK contracts will be confirmed when British defense minister Des Browne visits the show tomorrow. Production deals for the Royal Air Force (RAF) Nimrod MRA.4 maritime patrol aircraft and the Hawk Mk128 Advanced Jet Trainer are overdue. BAE is also seeking government funds for a British unmanned combat air vehicle (UCAV) technology demonstration program that it would lead.
