UK-based Spectro and its U.S. sister company Jet-Care (Booth No. C3516), providers of equipment condition monitoring services, announced their appointment by AgustaWestland as approved suppliers for debris and oil analysis services for all AW139s. Spectro and Jet-Care utilize the advanced analytical capabilities of scanning electron microscopes for in-depth examination of debris recovered from oil samples, filters or chip detectors, allowing detailed investigation into the metallic and non-metallic debris, helping to pinpoint the component generating the debris.
Mecaer Aviation Group has been selected by Eurocopter to design and manufacture the landing gear shock absorbers for the new-generation X4 helicopter. The company is responsible for the design, engineering, certification, production and after-sales support of the landing gears, and will provide to Eurocopter the absorbers for the nose landing gear and the two main landing gears, in addition to the nose landing gear electrical wheel lock actuator.
LMB of Malemort, France, is showcasing a range of its high-performance/high-reliability electric fans, blowers and motors here at Heli-Expo (Booth No. C3504). LMB designs and manufactures both AC (50/60 Hz, 400 Hz and wild frequency) and DC (12-300 VDC) brushless motors used in fixed- and rotor-wing aircraft, as well as in ground military vehicles. The company offers more than 1,000 shelf-qualified products, while its engineering expertise capabilities enable it to quickly design and build these components to meet specific requirements that meet Mil STD 810/461 and RTCA DO-160 standards.
Duncan Aviation is authorized to modify the Universal Avionics UNS-1C flight management system to include an extended-life battery. A Duncan Aviation tech rep told AIN, “The original battery voltage was 3.6 volts and the new one is 3.93 volts. While the voltage increase in this lithium watch-type battery seems small, it makes a big difference. Previously a battery warning meant a day or two at most until you had a databus failure locking up the entire system. The new battery gives you about three months [after a warning],” he said.
“No traditional business jet will take you closer to the speed of sound,” promises Gulfstream in an announcement about its recently certified G650, which boasts a maximum velocity of Mach 0.925.
Chemical giant BASF is claiming its Basotect open-celled melamine foam is both improving sound insulation and saving weight in the Russian Helicopters Mi-8. Used for an executive cabin refurbishing, it has cut interior noise from 85 to 80 dB. It has also saved 530 pounds, compared with the previous insulation arrangement. The special foam is affixed to “selected noise-intensive points,” at a thickness of 40 mm.
Lord (Booth No. 5337) announced it has been selected to supply the vibration isolator mounts for the Honeywell TPE331-14GR turboprop on the Kestrel single-engine turboprop, which is expected to fly in 2014. Lord has provided adhesives and coatings, vibration and motion control and magnetically responsive technologies to industry since 1924.

Timco Aerosystems’ new dynamic sled test facility in Wallburg, N.C., has received FAA approval for the testing of aircraft seats to show compliance with regulatory codes 14CFR25.562 and 14CFR23.562. The approval enables Timco to test seats for compliance with critical occupant safety impact standards, including 16-g horizontal and 14-g vertical structural thresholds.
Bauhaus Luftfahrt, a Germany-based aerospace think tank, has outlined its vision of an electrically powered, emission-free airliner–relying on batteries–that it believes could be in service by 2035. The most obvious aspect of the design is a C-shaped wing for greater lift. Another major feature is the use of superconductivity for better power transmission and greater motor power density.
