Duncan is demonstrating a video series and a field guide explaining how phasing interior maintenance with regularly scheduled maintenance events benefits passengers, prevents damage and controls long-term costs.

NBAA 2011 opening general session ribbon cutting ceremony.

A roster of aviation and political luminaries welcomed an energized crowd to the NBAA 2011 opening general session this morning at the Las Vegas Convention Center. Joining NBAA president and CEO Ed Bolen onstage were U.S. Senator Joseph Manchin III (D-W.Va.), FAA Administrator Randy Babbitt, NTSB chairman Deborah Hersman, Dave Everitt, presidetn of John Deere Agricultural and Turf Division, and former U.S. Senate majority leader Bill Frist of Tennessee. In opening remarks Bolen announced that the 64th annual gathering had more display aircraft, more exhibitors and already more registered attendees than last year’s convention.

Elbit Systems of America’s Kollsman Commercial Aviation unit is celebrating delivery of its 1,000th infrared enhanced vision system (EVS), which went to Gulfstream Aerospace. Pres Henne, Gulfstream senior v-p for engineering and test programs, accepted a plaque commemorating the event from Roy Gentry, Kollsman Commercial Aviation vice president.

Like a monster that keeps coming back to life in a bad horror movie, user fees have returned in the form of a mandatory surcharge on every flight of a business or commercial aircraft proposed in President Obama’s jobs creation/deficit reduction plan unveiled in September.

The competition is under way to provide air-ground data communications in U.S. domestic airspace, a key piece of the Next Generation Air Transportation System (NextGen). At the same time, the FAA has asked its NextGen Advisory Committee (NAC) to recommend a data communications “roadmap” through 2030, taking into account different datalink standards.
