Piaggio Avanti, Eagle, Colo., Jan. 15, 2007–The pilot’s failure to maintain directional control of the Avanti on landing was the cause of the accident, according to the NTSB. The ATP-rated pilot landed on Runway 25 at Eagle County Regional Airport and as he reduced power and started to select reverse thrust, the airplane swerved and he corrected with rudder.

Cessna Citation 560 Ultra, Farmingdale, N.Y., April 10, 2007–Taxiing at Republic Airport on Long Island, the NetJets Citation hit a parked maintenance van. There was minor damage to the van and the aircraft, but no injuries were initially reported. The Citation was registered to NetJets Sales, c/o Macafee & Taft, Oklahoma City.
Back in 2001, NetJets Europe might have considered a shortage of suitably qualified pilots to be a nice problem to face. At the time, the industry’s fractional ownership leader had no more than 80 clients in Europe–five years after having imported the concept from the U.S.
Cessna Citation 560, Woodruff, Wis., Jan. 5, 2006–The NTSB blamed the
NetJets captain’s “failure to maintain adequate airspeed during the landing which resulted in a stall/mush,” when the Citation’s wing hit the runway on landing at Lakeland Airport/Noble F. Lee Memorial Field, near Minocqua-Woodruff, and the
NetJets Europe expects to move into its new Lisbon, Portugal headquarters in December. The fractional provider already runs all its operational and administrative functions from the Portuguese capital and it is now investing $28 million in a much larger building that will house slightly more than 400 staff. It also has a sales and marketing office in London. The past three years have seen rapid growth at NetJets Europe.
The DOT issued a “show cause” notice on Executive Jet Management’s plans to launch a business jet commuter operation. EJM, a NetJets affiliate that provides aircraft charter and management, submitted a DOT application in March to launch scheduled commuter service using business jets to connect Chicago, Los Angeles and New York City. Based on information provided in the application, scheduled flights could start as early as this summer.
The FAA said its notice to tower controllers to review the taxi into position and hold (TIPH) procedure is not intended to end the practice, as the National Air Traffic Controllers Association (NATCA) alleges. “Basically, we are seeing a small trend of runway incursions resulting from that procedure,” said an FAA spokesperson. “We wanted to raise awareness and see if it is still required.
DE HAVILLAND DHC-8, SEATTLE, WASH., JAN. 19, 2004–At 11:38 a.m. the flight crew of Dash 8 C-GTAQ inadvertently landed on a taxiway at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SEA). There were no injuries to the captain, first officer, flight attendant or any of the 32 passengers, nor was there any damage to the aircraft, which is owned and operated by Air Canada Jazz.
The Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio, has initiated an environmental assessment for extending one of the runways of its airport (OSU) to 6,000 feet from 5,000 feet. The purpose of the project is “to improve safety and provide for more efficient operations of business aircraft,” according to the university, which operates the airport as part of its extensive aviation-degree programs.
Beech King Air B200, Hondo, Texas, Sept. 5, 2006–The Safety Board attributed the King Air accident to the airplane’s running over an unmarked pothole in the taxiway while taxiing for departure from Hondo Municipal Airport (HDO). A contributing factor was the rain obscuring the pothole.
