Boeing’s first BBJ3 is nearing completion at DeCrane Aircraft in Georgetown, Del., which is installing long-range fuel tanks and a head-up display. Once this work is done and the fuel system is certified, the first BBJ3 will undergo interior completion at an undisclosed completion center of the customer’s choice. The auxiliary fuel tank system allows the BBJ3 to fly 4,725 to 4,535 nm, depending on passenger load.
DAE Capital, the aircraft leasing and financial business arm of Dubai Aerospace Enterprise (DAE), has signed a deal with Aviation Partners Boeing (APB) to buy 50 shipsets of Blended Winglets for its new 737-700/800 Next Generation aircraft.
GKN Aerospace has delivered Blended Winglets for 767-300ER aircraft to Aviation Partners Boeing (APB) for certification flight tests in support of launch customer American Airlines.
The contract has involved the design and development of an 11-foot-tall winglet and will include manufacture of some 450 shipsets, with forecast peak production of up to 16 shipsets per month.
The marketers of the emergency vision assurance system (EVAS) have received an STC for installation of the equipment in Boeing 737-300 cockpits, with the first units being delivered for the narrowbody twinjet to Magic Carpet Aviation in Orlando, Fla. EVAS, marketed by EVASWorldwide of Ramsey, N.J., is designed to provide pilots with an unobstructed view of vital instruments and controls in the event of continuous smoke in the cockpit.
Airbus has inked a contract with Honeywell to upgrade the wingtip navigation lights on the A320 family with light-emitting diode (LED) technology. Intended to last 40 times longer than standard halogen lighting, the LEDs will be added to the production line starting next March. Honeywell’s LED wingtip bulbs last about 20,000 hours each, compared with 500 hours for a halogen bulb.
Beginning this October, new-build Boeing 737 jetliners will use GE Aviation Systems flight-management system (FMS) update 10.8 software. The change provides increased navigation database capacity (with room for growth) and accommodates different performance of 737s fitted with winglets. FMSs allow operators to meet required navigation performance standards for separation from the ground or other aircraft.
Teterboro (N.J.) Airport (TEB) manager Lanny Rider told AIN last month that if Boeing follows through on plans to produce a bizliner version of its 717 at less than 100,000 pounds mtow, the airplane would be welcome at his airport. “Let ’em come on in,” he said. Rider’s employer, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, which operates the airport, restricts 100,000-pound aircraft from using TEB without prior permission.
Pratt & Whitney passed one of the most important milestones in its long history as the much-heralded PurePower PW1000G took to the skies last month. Formally known as the Geared Turbofan, or GTF, the PW1000G demonstrator flew on a Boeing 747SP testbed from the company’s Plattsburgh, N.Y.
Private Nigerian operator Arik Air confirmed here it is a previously unidentified customer for seven Boeing 737-800s that will bring its fleet to 17 aircraft, of which three will be longer -900 variants. Arik Air also has on order five Boeing 777-300ERs and seven 787-9s (for which deliveries are being renegotiated to a
later date than the previously agreed 2013).
Snecma Services has signed an engineering support contract with Morocco’s flag carrier Royal Air Maroc. The two companies already participate in a partnership under their Snecma Morocco Engine Services joint venture–a maintenance, repair and overhaul shop for the Boeing 737s’ CFM56-3 and -B engines.
