Diamond Aircraft is showing a maritime-surveillance version of the popular DA42 MPP Guardian, equipped with the company’s own radar, in the static park here at the Farnborough Airshow. Founder of the Austrian company, Christian Dries, told AIN that Diamond developed the spinning AESA radar in the past 12 months, because conventional radar houses could offer only a two-year lead time. Diamond’s radar weighs less than 20 kg (44 pounds), offers a range of 120 km (75 miles), and also includes AIS, the maritime equivalent of IFF. Endurance of the aircraft is 12 hours.

Ural Works of Civil Aviation (UWCA) of Russia and Diamond Aircraft Industries (DAI) of Austria signed an agreement on Monday at the Paris Air Show to design and produce a series of diesel-powered 19-seat utility airplanes in Russia. The companies estimate that demand for these aircraft in Russia currently exceeds 200.

Canada-based Diamond Aircraft has again suspended its single-engine D-Jet program and has temporarily laid off the majority of its workforce while it restructures. “Regrettably, we need to suspend activity on the D-Jet program, pending the securing of additional funding,” said Diamond president and CEO Peter Maurer in a press release issued yesterday.

Diamond Aircraft CEO Peter Maurer has joined the board of directors of Park Electrochemical (Booth No. 5533). Maurer has been Diamond’s chief executive since 2000, and Diamond’s aircraft line features all-composite construction. Park Electrochemical manufactures digital technology including RF/microwave printed circuit materials for telecommunications and computers as well as advanced composite materials, parts, and assemblies for the aerospace industry. Park has facilities in Singapore, France, Kansas, Arizona, and California.

Austro Engine (Outside Exhibit 18), part of the group that owns Austria’s Diamond Aircraft, is exhibiting its new diesel and rotary engines for light aircraft and drones at the 2012 Farnborough International Airshow. The company is actively talking to other airframers about finding new applications for its AE series of diesel engines, which will include the in-development AE500.

The Diamond DA52 twin diesel made its first flight on Tuesday afternoon from the company’s headquarters in Neustadt, Germany. Diamond Aircraft chairman Christian Dries and head of flight-test Ingmar Mayerbuch were at the controls of the Austro Engine AE300E-powered airplane. No abnormalities were reported during the one-hour test flight. Diamond has not yet released a timetable for certification or production of the new seven-seat twin.

Diamond DA40 CS

Aircraft sales, services and support company Hawker Pacific (Booth H65) has announced an agreement with Flight Training Adelaide for the sale of up to 26 Diamond DA40 CS single-engine composite aircraft. In addition to serving as a vendor for Hawker Beechcraft and Bell Helicopter products, Hawker Pacific is the Austrian airframer’s appointed distributor for Australia and New Zealand.
