In the late winter of 1923, these 12 men were most of the workforce of the fledgling Sikorsky Aircraft. When this vintage image was captured, the men were taking a break in their struggle to complete an early flying-boat design inside a decrepit shed on a Long Island, N.Y. chicken farm. Visionary Igor Sikorsky (fifth from right) was in those days a freshly arrived Russian émigré, driven to the U.S.

Asked to visualize an environmentally “green” helicopter, most of us would think of a rotorcraft that was quiet. Given some more thought, the idea of a helo whose engines developed minimal polluting emissions might spring to mind.

Bristow Helicopters’ insurance companies have started legal action against Sikorsky Aircraft over the July 16, 2002 crash of an S-76A in the UK sector of the North Sea. The aircraft crashed as it was approaching Shell UK’s Santa Fe Monarch drilling rig in its Leman gas field, 45 miles north of Lowestoft. All 11 people on board were killed in the accident, which occurred at 7:44 p.m.

As the vertical lift industry convenes in Dallas next month (February 9 to 11) for the 55th HAI Heli-Expo trade show and meeting, it is a dazed and uncertain business beset by flat markets, rising (often ruinous) insurance rates, a growing shortage of rotorcraft pilots and mechanics and a soft overall economy.

Providing proof that persistence pays off, Sikorsky Aircraft received in the week before Christmas a most welcome present: type certification of its S-92 medium-twin transport helicopter (initially limited to VFR operations).

Sikorsky’s Keystone subsidiary will take over final assembly and completion of the S-76C++ and subsequent variants of the twin-turbine helicopter, including the S-76D, at its Coatesville, Pa. “heliplex.”  Mick Maurer, Sikorsky’s v-p for operations, said the company relocated the S-76 to make room for increased production of the Black Hawk at the company’s main plant in Stratford, Conn., beginning next year.

Sikorsky’s X2 technology dem-onstrator could fly by year-end, according to Peter Grant, Sikorsky’s director of advanced programs. The X2 is a coaxial rigid-rotor compound helicopter designed to achieve forward speeds up to 250 knots, and at that clip it would become the world’s fastest helicopter. The current helicopter speed record of 217 knots (set by a Westland Lynx) has stood for more than 20 years.

Saudi Arabia’s Ministry of Interior has ordered 40 Sikorsky helicopters in a deal valued at approximately $2 billion, the U.S.-based manufacturer announced here yesterday. The contract breaks down into 16 S-92 heavy twins, 15 S-76D medium twins and nine Schweizer 434 light singles. The contract calls for deliveries to begin in March 2008.
