Turboprop engine specialist Blackhawk of Waco, Texas, is celebrating its 300th engine upgrade at this year’s EBACE. The customer in question is Germany’s Reinhardt Michel, who owns and flies a Piper PA-31T Cheyenne, purchased in 2004.
In the first quarter, general aviation airplane shipments fell 4.6 percent, from 390 aircraft last year to 372 this year, according to data released today by the General Aviation Manufacturers Association (GAMA). However, GA airplane billings dived by 19.6 percent year-over-year to $3.7 billion in the first three months, due primarily to a 22-percent drop in business jet shipments, from 164 aircraft to 128.

Although few details are available about Dassault’s super-midsize SMS Falcon, the company is aiming for certification in 2016, according to Olivier Villa, senior vice president for civil aircraft. Hawker Beechcraft Services Tuesday named JoinJet of Denmark as the launch customer for its Hawker 800XPR upgrade. JoinJet is the charter division of the airline Sun-Air of Scandinavia.
After four years of flight tests, the first upgraded Lockheed Martin C-5M Super Galaxy was redelivered to the U.S. Air Force late last month. The most significant of the more than 70 changes in the reliability enhancement and re-engining program is the replacement of the four GE TF39 turbofans with modern GE CF6-80C2 engines that deliver 22 percent more thrust, improved fuel consumption and lower noise.

A study performed by research firm Conklin & de Decker for GE Aviation found “significantly increased operating efficiency, reduced variable costs and net savings” for buyers of the Power 90 engine upgrade. The Power 90 program replaces the King Air C90’s original Pratt & Whitney Canada PT6A-20/21 engines with the GE M601E-11A. Smyrna Air Center of Tennessee owns the STC for conversion of the King Air to the M601E.
