In a ceremony yesterday at the Sikorsky booth (No. 1641), Sergei Sikorsky presented four senior members of the Los Angeles County Fire Department with Sikorsky’s Winged S service award to mark the 50th anniversary of the L.A. County’s aerial firefighting operations. He particularly praised the firefighters’ last year of service dealing with a series of catastrophic blazes in greater Los Angeles.

Sikorsky unveiled its fully transformed Web site–www.sikorsky.com–to Heli-Expo’08 attendees yesterday. The revamped site uses a combination of video and Flash animation to bring Sikorsky’s aircraft to life. It also features an interactive helicopter tour.

In the late winter of 1923, these 12 men were most of the workforce of the fledgling Sikorsky Aircraft. When this vintage image was captured, the men were taking a break in their struggle to complete an early flying-boat design inside a decrepit shed on a Long Island, N.Y. chicken farm. Visionary Igor Sikorsky (fifth from right) was in those days a freshly arrived Russian émigré, driven to the U.S.

Eleven subcontractor employees have been arrested on charges they used fake immigration documents and lied about their pasts to get security clearances at Sikorsky Aircraft. Those arrested included eight illegal aliens who were accused of using false Social Security numbers and forged alien-registration cards to get jobs with as-yet unidentified Sikorsky subcontractors, according to U.S. Attorney Kevin O’Connor.

After several last-minute delays, Sikorsky delivered the first production S-92 to Petroleum Helicopters, which will use it for offshore service over the Gulf of Mexico. A second was due to be dispatched at press time and further arrivals are scheduled before year-end. Sikorsky plans to deliver an additional 18 aircraft next year. Including options, Sikorsky has orders for 60 S-92s.

MacCarthy Interiors in Surrey, England, has delivered its first Sikorsky S-92 with an executive interior. The job for a private owner was part of a contract with Harrods Aviation (MacCarthy is a preferred interiors supplier for Harrods), and involved first stripping out the old interior. Among the upgrade items is a forward lavatory and new leather seats.

Sikorsky’s Keystone subsidiary will take over final assembly and completion of the S-76C++ and subsequent variants of the twin-turbine helicopter, including the S-76D, at its Coatesville, Pa. “heliplex.”  Mick Maurer, Sikorsky’s v-p for operations, said the company relocated the S-76 to make room for increased production of the Black Hawk at the company’s main plant in Stratford, Conn., beginning next year.

At a time when the progress of big-ticket military helicopter programs is measured in decades, it is worth noting that the first Boeing Sikorsky RAH-66 Comanche production line opened September 17 at Sikorsky’s Bridgeport, Conn. plant.

Sikorsky Aircraft last month recognized Keystone Helicopter
for its achievement in completing and delivering the 50th S-76C+ helicopter. The aircraft is earmarked for delivery to Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering. Keystone, in Coatsville, Pa., has been the principal completion center for the S-76C+ since 2000.
