BBA Aviation subsidiary Signature Flight Support’s new FBO at Newark International Airport (EWR) opened last month, after an 18-month construction project. The $11 million facility occupies approximately 11 acres at the airport. It features a 39,000-sq-ft hangar and an 11,200-sq-ft terminal serving as the prototype for Signature’s newly designed interior traffic flow pattern. Built to Leed Gold standard, the terminal provides three lounges, including a separate VIP area.

Two airliners, as well as a privately operated helicopter, were targeted with laser pointers between 9:30 and 10 p.m. on August 15 as they approached Newark Liberty International Airport (KEWR) in New Jersey. The helicopter was 10 miles south of the airport at 1,600 feet at the time of the incident. A 737 and an ERJ-135 were illuminated approximately one mile east of Teterboro Airport (KTEB) while on final approach to EWR at 3,000 feet.

Hurricane Sandy closed the major New York City metropolitan area airports and forced the cancellation of more than 20,000 flights as it swept the Northeast region of the U.S. last week, leaving widespread flooding in its wake. The Category 1 hurricane, combined with cold fronts from the north and west, also disrupted operations at airports in Boston, Philadelphia, Baltimore and Washington, D.C. Other airports nationwide and internationally felt the ripple effect of the cancellations.
Airports in the U.S. East Coast escaped largely unscathed by high winds from Hurricane Irene this weekend, though flooding presented a problem at the metro New York City airfields, particularly Teterboro and Caldwell, N.J. Like TEB, Morristown and Newark Liberty International Airports were shut down at noon on Saturday, with the latter two restarting operations by Sunday evening.
The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has added three new gateway airports for general aviation flights headed for Washington’s Reagan National Airport (DCA). At last week’s meeting of the Teterboro Users Group, violations of the Dalton Runway 19 departure at Teterboro (N.J.) Airport were a concern. A recent clarification among air traffic controllers has established that pilots can use the VFR departure only if they request it; ATC cannot offer it.
Building on the success of its Teterboro (N.J.) flight-crew briefing module, the National Air Transportation Association (NATA) is developing a similar module for Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR).
Canadian regional carrier Porter Airlines has settled quite comfortably into the niche it began carving for itself two years ago, when CEO Robert Deluce finally realized his dream of reopening Toronto City Centre Airport to scheduled airline traffic. Today, Deluce oversees a fleet of eight Bombardier Q400 turboprops flying to seven destinations within a 500-nm radius of the island airport.
The U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia yesterday granted a petition by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey to order a stay of the FAA’s plans to auction takeoff and landing slots at Newark Liberty International Airport and New York JFK and La Guardia Airports.
