The FAA today issued a notice of proposed rulemaking to remove wording in Parts 91, 125 and 135 allowing pilots to take off with frost on wings, stabilizers and flight controls “if the frost has been polished to make it smooth.” The polished frost rules are found in 14 CFR 91.527(a), 125.221(a) and 135.227(a).
BEECH KING AIR 200, PIQUA, OHIO, AUG. 24, 2001–The King Air crashed, killing the sole-occupant pilot, as the ATP-rated pilot attempted a VFR approach to Piqua Airport in dense fog on his way to pick up a passenger for a scheduled charter flight.
OK, so we all know that no one ever does anything more than talk about the weather. But the folks at the National Weather Service’s aviation branch are doing their best to make sure that when they do talk about the aviation climate, at least the dialogue is as accurate as possible.
The Honeywell weather information network (WINN), compared by some to a veritable Weather Channel for the cockpit, is now available to major and regional airlines following completion of a four-month trial in an Airbus A320.
Fort Worth Center controllers last month began using the FAA’s new weather and radar processor (WARP), an interface that allows Doppler weather information to be displayed on the same radar screen as aircraft targets. An FAA spokeswoman said WARP enhances safety by allowing controllers to reroute traffic quickly around severe weather.
The FAA has installed nearly 30 Webcams in Alaskan mountain passes, rocky coasts and remote villages to supplement the agency’s aviation weather reports. Each of
the sites includes the direction being viewed plus a “loop” feature that permits a nearly 360-degree view. Images can be viewed at http://akweathercams.faa.gov.
The FAA on April 14 issued an Airworthiness Directive for all Bombardier Challengers, as well as the derivative CRJ100 and 440 regional jets, that requires revising the aircraft flight manuals to modify the cold-weather operations limitations and include additional limitations and procedures.
Early last month Atlantic Aviation bought three FBOs from SevenBar Enterprises, in Albuquerque and Farmington, N.M., and Hailey, Idaho. The purchase brings Atlantic’s total to 68 FBOs, which includes non-Atlantic-branded facilities in Alaska.
The FAA has certified a new airborne weather radar system for the Eclipse 500 developed by the Albuquerque, N.M. very light jet builder with assistance from Japan Radio (JRC) in Tokyo. Eclipse CEO Vern Raburn praised the approval as an example of the company’s ability to develop and certify its own technologies for the Eclipse 500.
A preliminary report issued by the UK Air Accidents Investigation Board on the January 4 crash of Challenger 604 N90AG at Birmingham, England, raises a suspicion that frost or ice on the wing may have been a factor. The aircraft, operated by Epps Aviation of Atlanta on behalf of agricultural machinery manufacturer Agco, had arrived the previous evening at 8:39 p.m. after a nonstop flight from West Palm Beach, Fla.
