Aiming to reduce exposure to potential residual-value guarantee (RVG) claims for the A340 twin-aisle quad-jet, Airbus plans to recertify the aircraft to carry 475 passengers, while Rolls-Royce works to improve the type’s engine efficiency and maintenance costs. The European manufacturer told a stakeholders’ forum on December 4 that with increased capacity and lower maintenance charges and ownership costs, the A340-600 can compete against the Boeing 777-200ER and -300ER and replace larger 747-400s.

Rolls-Royce’s strategy of feeding technological developments from new programs back to established engines for upgrades or retrofit changes is creating a range of enhanced-performance (EP) packages being available to customers.
Rolls-Royce (R-R) is developing continuous improvements for mature Trent engines, with new technology flowing from later models into established variants, according to program director John Hogarth. Since the original Trent–the Series700–entered service on a Cathay Pacific Airbus A330 in 1985, successive variants have been introduced to constitute a “tailored family” enjoying common architecture, but with each model dedicated to specific airframes.
Boeing and Turkish Airlines on Tuesday completed a firm order for forty 737 MAX 8s, ten 737 MAX 9s and twenty 737-800s, valued at $6.9 billion at list prices. The deal, originally announced as a commitment last month, includes options for another 25 MAX 8s and amounts to the largest Boeing order in Turkish Airlines’ history.
An order from Aviation Capital Group for fifty 737 Max 8s and ten 737 Max 9s last week lifted Boeing’s firm order total for the prospective re-engined narrowbodies to more than 1,000 and capped a solid year in which for the first time since 2002 the U.S. company outperformed Airbus in both deliveries and sales. Closed in December, the ACG contract increased the number of 737 Maxs on firm order to 1,029 and Boeing’s total firm order count for last year to 1,203.
Switzerland-based aviation maintenance and completion services firm Amac Aerospace has been granted Boeing 747-400 and 747-8 Part 145 approval, meaning that it can now provide base and line maintenance services on these types. The Boeing approvals come on the heels of Amac Aerospace gaining its European EASA Part 145 approval to undertake heavy base maintenance on the Boeing 777 and Airbus A330 and A340.
Philippine Airlines (PAL) has placed a firm order for 34 current-generation Airbus A321s, 10 A321neos and 10 A330-300s, Airbus announced today. A plan by the flag carrier to embark on a fleet renewal program calls for deliveries to start next year.
Rolls-Royce closed the Farnborough International airshow with a flurry of new business from Latin America. Brazil-based Synergy Aerospace signed a $630 million contract covering Trent 700 engines and TotalCare support for nine Airbus A330 aircraft ordered on July 12. Earlier, Colombia-based AviancaTaca placed a $280 million order with Rolls-Royce covering Trent 700 engines to power fourA330 freighters, as well as TotalCare support. The deal confirms a memorandum of understanding placed in November 2011. The four A330s will be operated by AviancaTaca subsidiary Tampa Cargo.
Malaysia Airlines has signed up for Rolls-Royce’s TotalCare support program for the Trent 900 engines on its fleet of six Airbus A380s. It already has the customer support arrangement for the Trent 800 turbofans on its fleet of 17 Boeing 777s.
Rolls-Royce is making further performance improvements to its Trent 700 engine, which powers the Airbus A330. Technologies from the Trent 1000, Trent XWB and BR725 engines are being incorporated into this latest Trent 700 variant, increasing efficiency by at least 1 percent.
