Last week Gulfstream noted the one-year anniversary of the first customer delivery of its flagship G650. The ultra-long-range twinjet received its FAA certification on Sept. 7, 2012, after a flight-test program that logged more than 4,400 flight hours over 1,319 flights. EASA approval followed in December. Over the past year, the Savannah-based airframer has delivered nearly 50 of the wide-cabin business jets to customers in Asia, Europe, the Middle East and North and South America.
International Water-Guard Industries (IWG) announced earlier this week that its agreement with Gulfstream Aerospace to provide water treatment units for the G450 and G550 has been renewed. The Canadian water systems specialist, based in Burnaby, B.C., has been providing water treatment units to Gulfstream for more than 20 years. The unit, manufactured by IWG Technologies, is standard on the G650.
Gulfstream Aerospace appointed Scott Clarey sales director for the U.S. Southwest. In his new role he is responsible for sales to new and existing customers in Arizona, Colorado, Kansas, New Mexico and Utah. Clarey, who is based in Tempe, Ariz., came to Gulfstream from Piaggio America, where he was the regional sales director in the western U.S. and western Canada. He has been a pilot since age 16 and has been in aviation sales for the last 10 years.
Gulfstream Aerospace recently marked the first anniversary of its 82,000-sq-ft Beijing service center at Beijing Capital International Airport. It is the only business-jet manufacturer to offer factory service in China.
“It has been a successful first year for Gulfstream Beijing,” said Mark Burns, president of product support. “We have experienced steady growth and have expanded our capabilities. As the Gulfstream fleet continues to grow in the Asia-Pacific region, we’ll look for ways to enhance and add to the services we provide at Gulfstream Beijing.”
Gulfstream Aerospace and Jet Aviation parent company General Dynamics announced on Friday that it is promoting Robert Smith to president of Jet Aviation. He will report to Joe Lombardo, executive vice president of General Dynamics’ aerospace group. Smith succeeds Daniel Clare, who is being tapped as the CFO of Gulfstream. Both appointments are effective January 1.
FlightSafety International has partnered with Gulfstream to provide an online course for FBOs on the proper ground handling for the Savannah OEM’s large-cabin business jets. The course covers all facets of handling and servicing, such as towing, parking, fueling, aircraft safety walk-around, lavatory servicing, window cleaning and snow and ice removal. “This course, which has been updated to include the G650, is a thorough review of how to keep our business jets–and the people who service them–safe,” said Mark Burns, president of Gulfstream product support.
FltPlan is offering its free aircraft weight-and-balance program via its website and mobile apps for more than 400 models. Since the program was launched 18 months ago, pilots have created 38,000 customized aircraft weight-and-balance profiles. In the past six months alone, FltPlan has added 165 aircraft models, ranging from a Cessna 150 to a Gulfstream G280. The cross-platform format works on the web, as well as on iOS, Android and BlackBerry devices, FltPlan said.
The second Gulfstream G650 to sell on the pre-owned market sold for $70 million via The Jet Business in London earlier this month. The private individual who took delivery of the new wide-cabin jet in July sold it to a Japanese property group for a profit of approximately $10 million. Steve Varsano, owner of The Jet Business, said he is currently in negotiations to sell another G650, “hopefully within the short term.” Gulfstream enforces strict anti-speculation clauses on its aircraft until they have been delivered.

Its latest record run started at 5:23 p.m. on Friday, when the aircraft departed Kuala Lumpur International Airport with Gulfstream pilots Jason Willis and Marilyn Whicker at the controls. The twinjet completed the 3,356-nm (6,215-km) flight to Al Maktoum Airport in 7 hours 34 minutes, averaging Mach 0.80.
